In Southern California, a high school teacher has made headlines after a video surfaced depicting him verbally confronting a student over a MAGA hat. The incident, which unfolded in Chino Valley High School, has sparked significant backlash and prompted an investigation by school officials.
The teacher, identified as Clyde Colinco, who also coaches girls’ golf, was recorded berating a student for wearing the controversial headgear shortly after Donald Trump was re-elected. The confrontation, which occurred in class, quickly escalated as Colinco made inflammatory remarks about Trump and those who support him. He was heard saying, “A child molester, huh? Vote for that freaking rapist,” while displaying deep anger and frustration.
His tirade continued with Colinco claiming that Christians who support Trump are “a bunch of losers” and expressing concern for his daughters and nieces. The video captures the intensity of his emotions, as he demanded security when the student refused to take off the MAGA hat, saying, “Can you send security up? I have a boy who has a Trump hat on, and I’m not going to tolerate it today.”
As the situation escalated, the frustrated teacher ordered the student to exit the classroom and dismissively asked, “Tell [Principal] Miller that you’re allowed to wear a freaking rapist hat. Go for it!” This exchange has raised alarm among parents and community members, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into Colinco’s conduct.
Chino Valley School Board President Sonja Shaw addressed the situation, reinforcing the gravity of the incident. She stated, “I want to assure you that this matter is being taken very seriously.” Shaw, who leads a community deeply troubled by Colinco’s dismissal of Christian beliefs, emphasized the importance of maintaining a respectful learning environment for all students.
Many community members, including those of faith, have expressed their dismay over the incident and the teacher’s remarks. Shaw noted, “I understand the concerns this situation has raised within our community, and I share in the deep frustration and sadness over the recent attacks on people who believe in Jesus.” She emphasized the need for unity and prayer in the face of such challenges.
In response to the incident, students at Chino Valley High School have even initiated a petition advocating for a fair investigation, suggesting that the situation could have been handled in a more constructive manner. They assert that while Colinco’s response was excessive, he was provoked by the student’s refusal to comply with his requests.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, the local school district previously became a focal point for controversy after implementing a policy mandating parental notification for students identifying as transgender. This policy has faced its own set of legal challenges and public debate, highlighting the community’s broader struggles with educational and social issues.
