At the recent Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in National Harbor, Maryland, Scott Turner, who helms the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, shared his belief that he is on a mission ordained by God.
Previously a pastor and NFL player, Turner expressed his conviction that his journey has been divinely orchestrated for what he labels as a “generational impact.”
With a spirited address, he connected his past experiences—from life as a University of Illinois graduate to his NFL career and entrepreneurship—to his current role in government.
Reflecting on his path, he stated, “I believe that from before the womb of my mother that He was preparing me for this moment, this day, for such a time as this.”
He detailed how each step of his life, including his tenure as an associate pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church, has contributed to his readiness to lead at HUD.
Diving into serious issues, Turner addressed the housing affordability crisis he feels personally connected to, especially as the father of a 24-year-old son who struggles to imagine homeownership.
He challenged attendees to view the situation not merely as a crisis but as a chance to innovate and uplift families toward self-sufficiency.
Turner emphasized the need for policies that can effectively reduce housing costs and increase availability for quality homes, declaring it an “opportunity” rather than a setback.
As he wrapped up his passionate speech, he reiterated that “the government rests on the Lord’s shoulders” and expressed gratitude for the chance to amplify the voices of underrepresented Americans.
Turner, who was confirmed for his current position with a Senate vote of 55-44, previously played a significant role under the Trump administration in creating transformative policies for distressed communities.
Former President Trump noted in a statement how Turner had catalyzed over $50 billion in private investment during his tenure overseeing Opportunity Zones.
As the CPAC gathering unfolded, other key speakers, such as Vice President J.D. Vance, addressed a range of topics relevant to the conservative audience, with discussions reflecting on social norms and gender roles.
Trump is expected to deliver a speech later this week, further energizing attendees of this year’s conference.
