The footage, which has gained over 2.5 million views, shows Mills energetically dancing at the Great Pumpkin Ball, which is known as the largest LGBT dance party in Portland.
Critics have taken to social media to voice their opinions, with Donald Trump Jr. tweeting, “Is this really what the people of Maine want in their Governor??? What an absolute clown.”
While the video has sparked heated discussions, it hasn’t been independently verified yet, and Mills’ office has yet to respond to inquiries.
This release comes right after a public confrontation between Mills and President Donald Trump during a meeting at the White House, where Trump discussed federal funding related to his recent executive order on women’s sports.
Mills firmly stated, “We are complying with state and federal law,” and indicated a readiness to settle their matters in court.
Following the exchange, the Equality Community Center celebrated Mills by sharing a photo of her in a similar Wonder Woman outfit holding a lightsaber, thanking her for standing up for Maine’s trans youth.
Meanwhile, the Department of Education’s civil rights division announced a Title IX investigation into allegations concerning female athletes in Maine’s schools.
The investigation specifically targets allegations against Greely High School, where one male student reportedly continues to compete in girls’ sports categories.
In response to the investigation, Mills expressed her concerns about its constitutionality and critiqued Trump’s methods, asserting, “No President… can withhold Federal funding… to coerce someone into compliance.”
She emphasized that the situation transcends athletics, arguing it revolves around the President’s authority and adherence to the rule of law.
Mills has a history of advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, having banned conversion therapy for minors in 2019, describing it as “barbaric.”
This year, she also broadened the legality of abortion in Maine to encompass any reason up until birth, alongside measures protecting providers of abortion and transgender-related medical services.
