During his chat with conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, Newsom, who many speculate might aim for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, acknowledged the contentiousness of the issue.
Kirk suggested that Newsom has a platform to appeal to moderates by standing against this controversial topic, saying, “You right now should come out and be like, ‘you know what, the young man who’s about to win the state championship in the long jump in female sports, that shouldn’t happen.’”
Newsom agreed, reinforcing the notion of fairness in sports, saying, “I think it’s an issue of fairness; I completely agree with you.”
Politico has not one, not two, but FIVE reporters covering the fallout of Gavin Newsom’s comments about men in women’s sports during my interview with him.

As the conversation progressed, he expressed deep respect for the world of sports, saying, “It’s deeply unfair” when trans-identified males compete in female competitions.
However, he balanced his remarks with compassion, highlighting the challenges faced by the trans community, stating that many suffer from mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
Newsom underscored the importance of addressing these concerns with “decency,” pointing out that discussions surrounding this issue need to be both fair and respectful.
His comments have sparked significant reactions from the LGBT community and allies, with organizations like Equality California expressing disappointment and stating that “Transgender kids — like all kids — deserve the chance to play sports alongside their teammates and learn important values.”
Scott Wiener, a Democratic state senator from San Francisco, found Newsom’s statements troubling, urging clear support for trans individuals, emphasizing, “Now is the time for Democrats to stand firmly with trans people.”
Newsom’s remarks come amidst growing concerns within the Democratic Party regarding the electoral impact of progressive stances on trans rights.
He pointed out that recent campaign ads have exploited this tension, such as an ad framing Vice President Kamala Harris as out of touch with average voters by focusing on cultural issues.
Amidst bipartisan discussions, Representative Seth Moulton from Massachusetts voiced his frustrations, reflecting on how the left sometimes avoids addressing serious concerns about women’s safety in sports.
Polls indicate a shift in how many Democrats view the participation of trans-identified athletes in women’s sports, with a recent survey showing that 67% of Democrat-leaning voters think such athletes shouldn’t compete in female categories.
Commentators and analysts are now watching closely, some suggesting that Newsom’s statements may reflect a wider political landscape that could lead to more debates about these challenging subjects.
Notably, conservative voices like Robert P. George view Newsom’s comments as a potential pivot point in the national dialogue about gender and sports.
As discussions about fairness and inclusion continue, the tension in political circles shows no signs of easing, especially as real-world implications unfold in schools and communities across the nation.
