Major House Bill Demands Proof of Citizenship To Vote

The House just took a major step to clean up our voter rolls, passing a bill that demands folks actually prove they’re U.S. citizens before getting registered to vote. Imagine that!

It’s called the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, and it cleared the chamber 220-208 yesterday, with every voting Republican and even four Democrats backing this common-sense measure. The bill, championed by Rep. Chip Roy and endorsed by President Trump himself, says you need docs like a passport or birth certificate for federal elections.

No more relying on just checking a box and hoping for the best. This aims to slam the door shut on any possibility of non-citizens casting ballots, a concern many Americans share, especially with the ongoing border situation. It also tightens rules on mail-in ballots, barring states from counting ones that trickle in after Election Day.

Naturally, the usual suspects are screaming bloody murder. Left-wing groups and Democrats are trotting out the tired “voter suppression” playbook, claiming millions – especially married women whose names might not match old birth certificates – could be inconvenienced or prevented from voting. They point to millions lacking easily accessible citizenship papers.

But supporters argue that ensuring only eligible citizens vote is fundamental to election integrity. The bill doesn’t just ask nicely; it puts teeth into the law, threatening election officials with serious penalties, including prison time, if they knowingly register ineligible people.

Of course, the fight isn’t over. The bill now heads to the Senate, where it faces the usual 60-vote Democrat filibuster hurdle. But House Republicans have drawn a clear line: proving you’re an American citizen to vote in American elections shouldn’t be controversial, it should be required.
