When President Trump sat down with El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele in the Oval Office this week, the conversation took a turn towards a hot-button issue: men competing in women’s sports.

Trump asked Bukele straight up if El Salvador lets biological males throw punches against women in boxing, a big sport down there. Bukele didn’t mince words. He flat-out called letting men compete against women “violence against women” and “abuse.”
The Salvadoran leader, known for his tough stance on crime, stressed his country is all about protecting women. He seemed baffled by movements pushing for biological males in female sports, saying it flies in the face of laws meant to stop men from abusing women. Bukele also pointed out that plenty of women hold top spots in his own government.
This isn’t the first time Bukele has waded into these waters. Just last year, he ordered “gender ideology” stripped from El Salvador’s public schools, calling it “contrary to nature, contrary to God.” While some human rights groups might clutch their pearls, Bukele’s common-sense approach is likely music to the ears of many concerned about the erosion of women’s spaces and traditional values.
